Das Monome ist wohl nicht unbedingt das beste Instrument, um darauf Bach zu spielen – anscheinend geht es aber doch, wie obiges Video beweist. Ganz gut gemacht, wie ich finde, denn es sieht sicher leichter aus, als es ist. Nur die Triller hat der Interpret ausgelassen…

Mit dem Monome und incisor Audio und Video zerstückeln

Eine neue Erweiterung des Monome-Klassikers Molar bringt uns endlich das Slicing von Video. Incisor heißt das Teil, das gerade in der Version 0.1 erschienen ist. Damit wird das Monome in Zukunft wohl auch für VJs sehr interessant werden.

Nicht schön, aber cool: Wireless MIDIGuitar

Momentan ist ein echter Boom bei neuartigen elektronischen Musikinstrumenten zu sehen und DIY-Experimente stehen an der Tagesordnung. Song Hojun vom Studio HHJJJ in Seoul hat sich um die Weiterentwicklung der Gitarre bemüht und folgende Dinge in seiner Wireless MIDIGuitar verbaut:

• 3-Achsen Beschleunigungssensor
• Monome-ähnliches Pad
• Druck-Sensor am Griffbrett
• Gitarrenkörper aus Fiberglas, Polystyrol und Aluminium

Im Video steuert der Erbauer damit Ableton Live. Was er musikalisch damit anstellt, haut mich zwar nicht vom Hocker, aber das Grundkonzept ist sehr interessant, bietet es doch eine Vielzahl an Eingabemöglichkeiten in einem Gerät.

Neue Monome-Software: Sample-Slicing mit mlrV

mlrV ist ein Patch für Max 5 und derzeit der Hype in der Monome-Community. Es ist eine Weiterentwicklung von Brian Crabtrees mlr. Damit können Samples aufgenommen, geloopt und zerstückelt werden. Trent Gill hat den vorhandenen Patch umgestaltet und um diese Dinge erweitert:

• Übersichtliches Interface mit größeren Anzeigeelementen (gut, wenn man möglichst wenig auf den Bildschirm sehen will – so hat man gleich alles im Blick)
• Das Interface passt sich automatisch dem verwendeten Monome-Modell an
• 2 neue Abspiel-Modi: One-Shot und Slice
• Vollbild-Anzeige möglich
• Delay, Volume und Tempo können per Tilt-Control (Neigungssensor) gesteuert werden
• Über so genannte ‘Inserts’ kann mlrV schnell und einfach durch andere Max-Patches erweitert werden

Schnellstart-Anleitung

Ich hatte anfangs einige Schwierigkeiten, mlrV zum Laufen zu bringen, daher hier eine Schellstart-Anleitung:

1. monomeserial starten (Achtung, Address Pattern Prefix auf ‘/mlr’ setzen)
2. Max starten und den Patch ‘_mlrV’ laden. Wer keine Max-Vollversion hat, kann mlrV auch mit der kostenlosen Max-Runtime-Version starten.
3. Soundkarte auswählen (Box im rechten unteren Bereich).
4. ‘dac’ klicken, das aktiviert die Audioausgabe – die CPU-Auslastunganzeige sollte sich bewegen.
5. Samples in das Feld ziehen, das mit ‘drop’ gekennzeichnet ist.
6. Für jede Spur kann nun über das Dropdown-Menu ‘input_x’ ein Sample ausgewählt werden.
7. Jede dieser Spuren kann über die entsprechende Reihe (plus 1) am Monome angesteuert werden – die erste Reihe ist mit Kontroll-Signalen belegt.

Fazit

Es macht Spaß, mit mlrV zu spielen und nachdem ich den Patch zum Laufen gebracht habe, ist innerhalb von 10 Minuten ein interessanter Track entstanden. Trotzdem ist meine Lieblings-Applikation für das Monome weiterhin molar, weil sie als Plugin direkt über Ableton Live angesprochen werden kann und andere Möglichkeiten für das Sample-Slicing bietet. mlrV hat wiederum den Vorteil einer übersichtlichen Benutzeroberfläche und der Erweiterbarkeit durch die neuen Inserts.

Am besten also selber testen und die Erfahrungen hier posten!

Presetsurfer mit Monome und Wiimote

Hier ein Mitschnitt einer Show meines elektronischen Alter Ego Presetsurfer beim Styrian Stylez Festival in Graz. Danke an die Jungs von Fruitmedia für’s Mitfilmen und Schneiden.

Das Konzept von Presetsurfer besteht aus zwei einfachen Grundregeln:

1. Verwende nur fertige Soft-Synth-Presets und modifiziere sie nicht. Normalerweise habe ich immer den Zwang, Synthie-Presets zu verändern, so dass deren Herkunft nicht erkennbar ist. Presetsurfer macht es genau anders rum.
2. Verwende den Computer nur als Klang-Generator, nicht als Controller. Die ganze Performance wird nur mit Monome und WiiMote gesteuert, der Computer bleibt im Hintergrund – kein buckliges Herumgefuzzle vor dem Screen!

Neben Monome und Wiimote sind im Einsatz: ein schwarzes Macbook, Ableton Live, ein Shure SM58 und die Native Instruments Audio Kontrol. Als Synths kommen Absynth und Massive zum Einsatz.
